I Can Accomplish Anything
Larry F. • Augusta, GA • Fried Chicken Fan
Who helped you cope with relocations and/or deployments?
My family. I come from a very large one, so being away from them was hard. We didn’t have cell phones then so I wrote a lot of letters. My brother, who is my hero, was in the Navy too so he was able to tell me some of the ins and outs.
There were also times we were able to take advantage of different events with the Navy band, made possible through the USO.
What did you learn about yourself through your military experience?
I can accomplish anything once I put my mind to it, but more importantly, I can accomplish even more through teamwork! During my 25 years at Kroger, I’ve been able to apply this experience.
We often hear after friends and family, a taste of home is what our servicemembers miss the most. What home-cooked meal did you crave when you were away?
My mother’s fried chicken, collard greens and cornbread. She just had that motherly touch…she never used a recipe. I think about those Sunday meals, and it’s not even so much the meals as it’s the family atmosphere…the closeness. And my mother instilled how to cook in all of my brothers and sisters, so nowadays everybody cooks and brings a favorite dish.
