As a captain in the Ohio Army National Guard, our associate Keith M. has served in Iraq, where he saw the positive impact of the USO firsthand. "The USO is such a vital organization that supports service members during their travel abroad and is often embedded with the services on bases in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. The USO is that organization we can depend on to offer us a place to call home, have a home-cooked meal or to visit a celebrity during our tour of the combat zone," says Keith. What does Keith like most about being in the Ohio Army National Guard? "The camaraderie that is shared with other soldiers," he says. "The military is made up of different people with different ethnic, cultural, political and religious backgrounds. However, all of those differences are pulled together for the purposes of a particular mission. Those occurrences don't readily happen throughout our society, but in the Armed Forces, you often see men and women standing back-to-back, developing and finding ways to overcome obstacles together."
Our associate Tammie B. is a full-time mom, student and Army Reserve soldier. She’s currently attending Central Georgia Tech College where she’s studying to become a nurse. “Enlisting in the U.S. Army Reserve is one of the best decisions I have ever made,” she says. “I am very pleased to be recognized for volunteering to serve and protect our homeland. The Kroger Co.'s support for the troops and the USO has made a huge difference in so many lives. I personally applaud the company and its associates for providing soldiers throughout the country an opportunity for recognition."

Our associate Mark E. is currently a major in the United States Air Force, serving as an academy liaison officer on reserve duty. He works with aspiring high school youth seeking congressional nomination and appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. Mark met his wife, Kari, who also now works as an academy liaison officer and a commercial airline pilot, while attending the United States Air Force Academy. Mark was motivated to support the Kroger Co.'s "Honoring our Heroes" project because of his admiration for the work of the USO and appreciation of the $1.5 million raised by the Kroger Co. for its work. "I have seen firsthand the incredible support the USO provides to deployed service members and their families; it truly makes a difference", says Mark.

"I love being part of the military because I feel like that's where I was born to be," says our associate Megan R., whose dream of becoming a mechanic has come true during her time in the U.S. Army Reserve. "I like the discipline and structure the military teaches. And Kroger is a great place for military personnel because it's flexible and supports our troops," says Megan, who is currently serving as a Specialist/E4.
